OPERATING AND ESTABLISHMENT OF SANITARY LANDFILL

In order to decrease adverse environmental effects of solid wastes, unsanitary disposal areas should be abandoned and sanitary landfills should be established. Site selection, size of lots to be established, impermeability of the ground, type and sort of waste to be received should be taken into consideration for a sanitary landfill project. Storage gas is formed as the result of consumption of available oxygen by wastes stored in solid waste sanitary landfills in the course of time and of their anaerobic decomposition with help of anaerobic bacteria multiplying in this environment. Formation of the gas may vary depending on organic waste quantity available in solid waste. Methane available together with combustible and explosive properties of storage gas has a greenhouse effect 23 times higher than carbon dioxide gas. In order to eliminate adverse effects of storage gas, it should be collected and disposed of with proper techniques. Waste gas produced in sanitary landfills in anaerobic environment should be absolutely disposed of by burning or using it for energy generation.
